tried to see what the fuss was with neil gaiman books. saw a book of his in national bookstore congreesional avenue. the price was around P1000 i think. can't remember the title but it was a graphic book with a cd at the back flaps.
i could not believe it -- P1000 for a book that has so little words and graphics that what my daughter used to draw. i should have saved her drawings then and sold it as gaiman art?
i think the title is the day i swapped my dad for 2 goldfish...
common guys...be serious...select a better author...
i think it is a case of the emperor's new clothes...
to each his own. wouldn't it be cool if this is indeed the surprise? :)
anonymous: you should check out Sandman and any of his other novels. and his book is not the only children's book with that few drawings and words being sold at that price. but as galenlondeien said, to each his own. :D
To anonymous:
First off, while Gaiman does draw from time to time, he's not the one who drew "The Day I Swapped My Dad for 2 Goldfish". Any criticism on art should go to his artist, Dave McKean. Whether that's art or not is up to the reader.
Following that line of reasoning, whether you like Gaiman or not is up to you. Is it good writing or is it bad is up to the reader.
Third, you can't put a price on writing or on art. If two books costs the same, say P500, is the one with more pages superior? Length isn't always as important as quality. If that were the case, then poetry and short stories and children's stories would be inferior to novels. But that's not the case.
Fourth, if you don't like it, then don't buy it. I'm sure if people stopped buying, NBS would stop carrying them. Speak with your wallet.
Fifth, perhaps if your daughter published a book. But she didn't. And that's what separates Dave McKean as an artist or Neil Gaiman as a writer. Many people claim they know people who are more talented, yet they aren't published. It's like the argument "my dad can beat up your dad".
Sixth, if you're so confident about your statement, why hide in anonymity?
To galenlondeien:
Sources say that is part of the surprise, but not wholly accurate.
I forgot to post: Ramon says the Neil Gaiman/Fully Booked event is soon: http://mindfuel.blogspot.com/2005/11/its-exclamation-point-kinda-day-man.html
